[John Hancock] John Avery Signed Appointment Document. One page, partially printed, 10.75" x 12", [Boston], July 1, 1781, with Massachusetts seal attached, with the usual fold creases, some light scattered foxing, else very good condition.

    In this document John Hancock as governor and commander in chief of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts appoints Joseph Frost "Major of Brigade to the Brigade of Militia in the County of York [Maine] in said Commonwealth whereof John Frost Esq. is Brigadier." Signed by John Avery as Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

    More Information:

    Joseph Frost (1738-1810) was born in Kittery, Maine. He had an active military career and served in the Canadian Campaign of 1759, and was present at the siege of Boston in 1775. When Burgoyne invaded New York, Colonel Frost's regiment became adjunct to the army under General Gates, and after Burgoyne's surrender, he joined Washington's central division and participated in the Battle of Monmouth. John Hancock served as Massachusetts first and third governor. John Avery served as Secretary of the Commonwealth from 1780 to 1806.
