Description

[George Washington] 1799 Requisition for Gunpowder "to be expended on Friday next being the anniversary of Lieut General Washington's Birth Day". One page, 7.75" x 9.75", [Boston], February 19, 1799, with the usual fold creases, some modest foxing, and small tears and chips along the edges, otherwise in very good condition.

The captain of the Boston Artillery was not about to let Washington's 67th birthday go unnoticed, ergo he sent Benjamin Larkin, Lieutenant of Artillery to the offices of the Quartermaster General, Amasa Davis, to pick up powder and related items to make sure the former President's birthday was celebrated in pyrotechnic splendor. A rare and unusual document.
