(French and Indian War) Printed Document, nine pages, 7" x 11.25", (London, Printed by Thomas Baskett, 1757) an act of Parliament imposing an embargo against France prohibiting colonial exports of most food-stuffs -- except to Great Britain -- after war was declared against France on May 15, 1756. The legislation is entitled "An Act to prohibit for a limited Time the Exportation, of Corn, Grain, meal, malt, Flour, Bread, Biscuit, Starch, Beef, Port, Bacon, and other victual (expect Fish and Roots and Rice, to be exported to any Part of Europe Southard of Cape Finisterre) from His Majesty's Colonies and Plantations in America, unless to Great Britain or Ireland..." Cape Finisterre is the western-most point of land in Spain and used as a common reference point for the 43rd parallel. The real meaning behind this was to prohibit trade to the French Caribbean, dependent on American exports in the eighteenth century. Extremely light toning at margins, else Fine condition. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
