[Battle of Bennington]: Daguerreotype of Veteran Soldier. Measuring 2.5" x 3.25" (sight), and framed under glass in an ornate, hinged thermoplastic case to 4" x 5", this quarter-plate daguerreotype supposedly depicts Battle of Bennington veteran George Warner, Jr., of Rupert, Vermont. The Battle of Bennington, an engagement of the Revolutionary War, was fought on August 16, 1777. It was a decisive American victory with 207 German and British soldiers dead, and only 70 American casualties (30 dead, 40 wounded). The upper right corner of the back of the case is chipped, with some wear to the velvet lining. The daguerreotype shows some discoloration around the edges, but the image is clear and bright.

We are unable to verify the attribution or service record of Warner, as both service and pension records from this period are incomplete. Given the format (circa 1855 daguerreotype) and age of the sitter, the gentleman in question may well have been a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
