    Description

Republic of Texas: The Finest Known Dragoon Officer Model 1833 Saber.
This is possibly one of only three known. The original orders for the Texas swords were by N. P. Ames, Springfield, Massachusetts on February 4, 1840. In the order, eighteen Texas Dragoon Officer's swords were delivered; they were inspected by William Smith, U. S. Inspector of Arms. This sword is patterned directly from the U. S. Dragoon sword in use by the U. S. Army at the time ( Ames Sword Company 1829-1935, Hamilton, Page 34).
The 3-branch hilt is brass with perimeter lines. The quillon is nicely marked "W. S." for William Smith's inspection. The sharkskin officer's grade grip has double-strand wire. the Dragoon blade is quill backed single edged and fully etched with military motifs, swords, flags, a Liberty pole and Cap and a large center panel with five pointed star surrounded by the letters "Texas" enclosed by lightning bolts, clouds and sun rays, a very dramatic presentation of the state's name. The steel scabbard has two ring bands with carrying rings and the distinctive large Dragoon drag. The most sought after of all Republic of Texas edged weapons.
Condition: The sword has a very pleasing light brown patina to the brass. The original buff washer is still in place, and the blade etching is all very clear with most of the original frosting finish.
