    Description

Regulation Civil War Era Union Brigadier General's Frock Coat. A most difficult-to-find item for the collector of Civil War material, this handsome, untouched general grade officer's coat is in excellent condition and includes its original pair of impressive Brigadier General epaulets. As per regulation, the coat has its full compliment of staff officer buttons with eight buttons (backmarked "Extra Quality") distinctively spaced in twos on the chest. The midnight blue velvet trim shows moderate wear on the cuffs and heavier wear on the collar, but the body of the coat is in excellent condition and shows little wear at all. The sleeves have the flared elbow and narrower cuffs typical of the period. Inside, the coat is lined with beautifully quilted deep green silk and the sleeves have a cream colored silk lining with a narrow sky blue stripe. A gold bullion five-pointed star is sewn on each shoulder to designate the owner's rank when the coat is not worn with the epaulets, as would be done in the field. The regulation epaulets are in stunning condition with a large, raised silver embroidered star on each. The undersides are lined in red glazed paper and padded velvet and each brass clasp is marked either "left" or "right" to indicate their proper position on the coat. This is a garment that shows all the refinements of the Civil War years and is a truly fine and rare example of what the well dressed general would be wearing.
