    Description

Rare Prototype Gilbert Smith .58 Caliber Percussion 3 Band Rifle. With no other specimens noted, 55 1/2" overall with 38 1/2" round barrel, finish a mix of bright / gray with areas of dark staining, fixed front sight, graduated rear sight, sharp bright bore. Case hardened receiver shows vivid color, minor scratches at the hinge, finely engraved on the top flat "Gilbert Smith's Patent 1857 Poultney & Trimble Baltimore Md". Tight crisp action, brass bands, trigger guard and butt plate very good. Sling swivels at the receiver and center band. Wood excellent with minor dents and scratches, deep old patina. A rare and attractive rifle certainly worthy of more research. From the Michael Yeck Collection.
