    Description

Rare Confederate Ross Winan Pike. Amidst the outrage caused by the passage of the 6th Massachusetts through the city of Baltimore, on April 19, 1861, the city's police commissioner instigated a contract with Ross Winan, proprietor of a local ironworks, to supply the city with pikes for the city's future defense against the 'Yankee invaders'. Winan eventually supplied several thousand of these crude, double edged, leaf shaped wrought iron pikes, which were originally fitted with an 8' haft. The pikes were delivered just prior to the city's seizure by Federal authorities. Federal authorities promptly seized both the pikes, along with several thousand muskets that had been supplied to the city by the state of Virginia. Whether done at the time to render them useless, or subsequent to their acquisition by a surplus dealer, such as Bannerman, the hafts of the pikes were cut off, leaving the configuration represented by this example. The crude blade is 9" long, with a very heavy 2 1/8" iron ferrule, and retaining 6" of the original 1 1/2" diameter wooden haft. Deep dark patina overall with some scattered pitting and very light surface rust on the blade. An excellent, generally untouched, example of this iconic early war Confederate associated polearm.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
