    Description

Rare Complete Set of Alberto Martini's "La Terza Danza Macabra Europea" (Europe's Dance of Death) WWI Propaganda Post Cards, 1915.
Italian artist and illustrator Alberto Martini (1876-1954) produced a series of Allied propaganda post cards in 1915 based on the medieval "Danse Macabre" (Dance of Death), an artistic allegory on the universality of death. Death comes to us all no matter what our station in life. With the onset of WWI and the growing certainty that it would be a scythe cutting through the political and social fabric of Europe, Martini utilized a style of art combining surrealism, metaphysical and some Dada elements to describe the horror engulfing Europe in a series of post cards. This is a complete set of Series III, twelve post cards in total which retain the original wrapper. The color lithography was done by Domenico Longo. The post cards are graphic and poignant, yet beautiful in their grotesque way. The cards are numbered 25 through 36, and are captioned in both Italian and French. Each is housed in a protective sleeve with a printed caption. Rarely do complete sets in this condition come to market.

Condition: Excellent. Modest toning to the paper and the original wrapper shows signs of repair, otherwise a handsome set.
