Rare and About Mint Regulation Cavalry Musician's Jacket. One of the most highly sought after pieces of Civil War uniform is the colorful cavalry bugler's "shell jacket," and this arsenal-made example is in near perfect condition. The blue wool body is trimmed as per regulations with 3/8" yellow herringbone worsted braid down the front and on the bottom edge, cuffs, collar and back seams, with the typical "pillows" on the back to support the saber belt. Across the chest are twelve rows of the same bright yellow braid, marking the owner as a musician. The body is in excellent condition with nine of the original twelve small general service buttons intact on the front and all buttons remaining on the collar and functional cuffs. The interior is dazzling, with red and blue plaid cotton lining in the body and red and white pinstripe cotton lining the sleeves. One sleeve is boldly stamped with a size number "1" over "SA" showing manufacture at Schuylkill Arsenal in Philadelphia. There is also a "Maltese cross" inspector's stamp in that sleeve and both sleeves have stamped a single ½" "dot" used to designate size during the assembly process. The overall condition is superb with no moth damage and all colors bright. There is only the tiniest seam opening at one arm and in the lining of each sleeve. One of the very finest examples of this scarce and very appealing uniform coat.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
