    Description

Quartermaster's 1864 Autograph Letter Signed to Mother Regarding Missing Son, Delos Shattuck. One page, 7.75" x 12.5" lined paper, August 29, 1864. Written "In camp near Petersburg, Va" by "S. C. Hall/ Q.M. Sergt Co 'I' 8th N Y Arty" to Mrs. [Cornelia] Wilbur, mother of Delos Shattuck (his father had died in 1858 and she remarried). It reads: "The enclosed papers arrived here this morning for Delos Shattuck. It is my painful duty to inform you that Delos with 21 other boys of Co 'I' have been missing since the fight of the 25th on the Petersburg and Weldon R[ail] Road where we were surrounded, only about 20 of our Reg getting away. He was undoubtedly taken prisoner; as we have heard nothing from any of them since. Trusting that he may be alive and well & able soon to return to us." Sadly, that was never to be as Shattuck was taken prisoner and sent to the horribly overcrowded Salisbury Prison in South Carolina where he died the following February at age eighteen. He is buried at Mount Rest Cemetery in Bergen, New York, near both his parents. Letter is very fine.
