Pro-McClellan Election Letter. 4-page letter written in ink on lined bifolium writing paper, Camp near Fort Winston, October 29, 1864, from J. O. Wilson (Company H, 198th Regt. 1st Brigade/Division 5 Army Corps), to his friend "Uncle Samuel". There is a caricature of Lincoln on the front page marching off into the sunset. He first describes in an offbeat way some skirmishes with the rebels: "... the mines came throng the woods whiry whiry and once in a while a shell would come in rattle bang helterly skelter clear the track but what did we care as long as they did not hit us... as for our boys we have not fired at the enemy yet." Turning to politics: "... I will try my very best to vote. they allowed us all to vote at the other Election and I don't think they can prevent us from voting but I will let them know that I will not vote for Old Abe if I dont vote at all. I rec[eived] a good lot of tickets... and I intend the tickets shall be put to good use... do all for little Mac that you can for if he is elected I think this war will soon be over but if Old rail splitter goes in then look out, for I believe they can stand it to fight as long as we can."
