Western Pennsylvania/ Allegheny County Full Stock F/L Rifle. 42½" .44 caliber octagonal rifled barrel 7/8" across the flats. Barrel dark and smooth with a script signature on the top flat which is difficult to read but possibly Allison. The gun has been nicely reconverted to flintlock. All brass furniture with the exception of the beautifully engraved silver oval cheekpiece depicting a variation of an embryonic bird pattern. Also an oval silver wrist escutcheon. Beautiful patchbox with four piercings, a form unique to this school with this being an exceptional example. Engraved overall with floral rosettes, scroll work and an embryonic bird form on the lid. Unusual trigger guard with a round bump where the bow joins the front extension. Unembellished brass side plate. 4½" toe plate which incorporates the patchbox release. Curly maple stock generally excellent but there is a heavily worn area near the top of the butt plate on both sides, possibly where it was sitting against something hot, detracts little. There are also a few very narrow slivers that have been replaced along the forestock, minor. Unique forestock and buttstock molding with an interlocking chain of small curls running the entire length of the forestock, along with two incised lines. The same design is exhibited along the lower edge of the butt stock. Also a shallow relief carved panel at the top of the comb and an incised line accenting the cheekpiece. A very pretty rifle, of exceptional length. It is very uncommon to see a rifle of this quality from this late developing Western Pennsylvania school.
