    Description

Very Scarce, U.S. M1798 Contract, .69 Caliber Smoothbore Flintlock Musket by Daniel Gilbert of Mansfield, Massachusetts. Gilbert originally contracted for 2000 pieces with only 875 being delivered. This example is dated 1800 on the tail of the lock, with intertwined US above D. Gilbert in the center. The barrel, at the breech, exhibits several proof marks including W, P and M on the top, and NR on the side. While the barrel is unquestionably in the original flintlock configuration, careful examination of the lock indicates that it has been professionally reconverted, although difficult to detect, very well done. All metal excellent with smooth dark patina, just some minor pitting in the area of the touchhole/ breech. Other than the reconversion of the lock, and the upper lock bolt, which is missing, the gun is complete and original in every respect. AF marked on the butt plate extension. Wood very nice with dark smooth untouched patina. There is an old repair to a hairline at the wrist, with no loss, that could easily be made imperceptible. The initials UBC carved on the right side of the butt. Nice example of a very rare early U.S. military longarm.
