Elegant quality, fine condition.
Unsigned, Relief-Carved, Full Stock Percussion Pennsylvania Rifle from the Franklin County Pennsylvania/ Northern Maryland Region, Circa 1840. 41½" octagonal barrel 15/16" across the flats, approximately .45 caliber rifled bore. Silver blade front sight, V-notch rear sight. Single screw percussion lock marked "London Warranted," adjustable double set triggers. All metal generally with smooth dark patina, untouched. Just one small area of pitting around the nipple. All brass furniture including closed end 1¾" nose cap, octagonal ramrod pipes, trigger guard, 3½" toeplate and lock bolt plate. The brass patchbox incorporates a finial normally encountered in the Franklin County area, while the pierced sideplates with rudimentary "wheel" motifs are more reminiscent of the Emmittsburg/ Northern Maryland region. The lid incorporates a spring and catch without a release button. All furniture perfect. Oval silver wrist escutcheon, and silver crescent moon with delineated mouth inlaid on the moulded cheek piece, both with untouched dark patina. The maple stock, with distinctive curl, shows a few minor dent/ scratches but really very fine, retaining much of the original finish, with deep rich patina. There is an incised line forming a moulding along the ramrod channel that terminates in a scroll, both sides of the lock area are on undercut panels. There is an incised line separating the wrist from the butt stock, and an incised line moulding along the bottom edge of the butt stock. The cheek carving is a classic rococo form with a horizontal C scroll that crosses itself, with several tendrils. The left, closed, portion of the C scroll exhibits delicate cross hatching, again typical of the Franklin County area in the tradition of makers such as John Noll. The carving combines both relief and undercut work. A beautiful rifle, in the Golden Age tradition, in superb condition.Auction Info
