    Description

Very rare, in superb untouched condition.

Spanish Military Musket of the Napoleonic Wars Period. 57" overall with 41½" .69 caliber smooth bore barrel that is octagonal for 7" at the breech, tapering to round. Rectangular bayonet lug/ sight affixed 2½" from the muzzle. The brass double strap front band is held in place by a spring with a square lug. The middle band, which mounts a sling swivel and the rear band, are both brass and friction fitted. Brass side plate and butt plate, with protruding heel. The brass trigger guard, which is reminiscent of the M1763 French musket, mounts a sling swivel on the front of the bow. The massive flat face lock with protrusion at the tail and squared off at the front, utilizes a single click tumbler, with an external catch that is actuated by the trigger to provide half cock/ safe. The jaw screw has a ½" diameter loop at the top, brass pan, and heavy frizzen, that is grooved on the face. The gun displays absolutely no external markings. The stock utilizes a deep channel extending from the wrist to form the comb. The gun is in superb untouched/ "as found" condition. All metal with a smooth deep dark patina with just some old scattered surface rust. All brass furniture with deep dark patina. Stock also untouched with rich patina and just some tiny scattered worm holes. The ramrod channel is very narrow and actually partially encloses the original iron ramrod. There is a period wood peg repair, utilizing the original wood, to a crack between the lock and the barrel tang. There is a name lightly scratched in script on the cheek side of the butt, the last three letters of which are clearly "..gas". Indigenous to Texas the gun possibly saw subsequent use in the hands of Mexican troops. Rare gun in wonderful condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
