    Fine quality, exceptional condition.

Percussion "Mule Ear" Side Hammer, Full Stock Percussion Pennsylvania Rifle by Joe Long, Beaver Springs, Pennsylvania, Circa 1840. Long is renowned for being both prolific and an exceptional craftsman. 38¾" octagonal barrel 1" across the flats with deeply rifled, approximately .45 caliber, bore, perfect, with punched decoration on the face of the muzzle. Barrel with attractive smooth dark patina mixing with what appears to be an original acid brown finish. Just some minor pitting around the nipple. Script initials "J. L." on the top flat of the barrel flanked by engraved asterisks. The handmade lock is decorated with vines and asterisks and exhibits some rather heavy pitting around the nipple. The exquisite hand crafted hammer also decorated with engraved vine and line motifs. Impressive brass patchbox covering most of the buttstock with eight piercings, ric-rac engraving on the finial, and line engraving on the lid. The release is exposed in an aperture on the butt plate. 3¾" brass toe plate decorated with engraved asterisks. Eight pointed silver star inlaid on the cheek piece, which displays a line engraved brass moulding. Brass lock bolt plates with line/ vine engraving, adjustable double set triggers, oval silver wrist escutcheon. Original hickory ramrod with flared brass tip and iron ferrule at the base to attach a worm/ ball screw. The maple stock with rudimentary artificial striping about perfect, just showing some minor wear/ use to the finish on the forestock, and high points. There is an incised line moulding along the ramrod channel. A very pretty Pennsylvania rifle, by a desirable maker, in wonderful condition.
