Percussion Half Stock American Rifle with Magnificent Furniture. Unquestionably a C. 1860 restock using furniture and barrel from a much earlier, and obviously superb quality, rifle. .44 cal. deeply rifled 38¼" octagonal barrel, likely shortened at least several inches from the breech when restocked. Barrel smooth and gray with just some pitting around the drum. Silver blade front sight on brass base, v-notch rear. The top flat of the barrels is decorated with panels of intertwined engraving. The magnificent "preening bird" patchbox clearly indicative of a rifle from the 1800 - 1820 period, likely southeastern or south central Pennsylvania. Six piercings and exquisitely engraved with floral/ scroll work on the lid, and the bird's feathers nicely delineated. Early style brass butt plate with a small extension at the bottom where it had apparently been broken and repaired when restocked. Plain 3¼" toeplate that incorporates the patchbox release. No cheek piece but inlaid on the cheek side of the butt with a wonderful 1 3/8" x 2¼" oval silver plate beautifully engraved with a classic "chicken eagle," again indicative of the early period of the furniture. Brass trigger guard and decoratively cut trigger trigger with curled tip also from the earlier gun. The walnut stock is about perfect with nice smooth patina. Single bolt percussion lock, added when restocked, exhibits rolled engraved decoration. Mechanically fine. The gun is fitted with a pewter forend tip and two iron ramrod ferrules, one of which has been resoldered. Retains what appears to be the original ramrod. The remains of what was once a truly beautiful and quite valuable rifle.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
