    Description

An historically important grouping of singular rarity.

Magnificent U.S. Diplomatic Corps Uniform, C. 1850, with Whole Plate Daguerreotype of the Owner. Exquisite whole plate daguerreotype bust portrait of Charles Brickett Haddock, son of Charles Haddock and Abigail Webster (sister of Daniel Webster). Finest quality, pristine condition with original seal intact. In the original case with Whitehurst logo on the velvet pad as well as on the mat. Haddock was born in 1796 in New Hampshire and served as U.S. Charge D' Affaires to Portugal from 1850 to 1854. He died in 1861. The uniform and image were consigned to Heritage by his direct lineal descendants. The uniform is composed of the coatee and two pairs of trousers.

The coatee is single breasted with a nine button front, fabricated of the finest quality blue wool. All buttons are Tice GS226A1 Ackerman & Mixer, Extra Superfine, New York. The standup collar, rising to 2½" at the back, cuffs and tail pocket flaps display heavy gold bullion leaf and berry motifs. There are two buttons (same backmark) on each tail. The tails are raw cut and both the body and tails are lined with white silk, the breast area padded and quilted, and decorative stitching on the inside of the collar. The sleeves are also lined with white silk and the tail pockets are lined with white cotton. There is some minor separation of the silk lining from the coat along the bottom edge and a few holes in the silk lining in the armpits, else about perfect, beautiful coat. The blue wool trousers are of fairly heavy stock, doubtless meant for winter wear, with a bib front, belted back and hidden pockets that are accessed at the side under the bullion stripe. Closure is affected by black four hole porcelain buttons. Each leg with 2 1/8" gold bullion stripe embroidered with oak leaf and acorn motif. The trousers are in perfect condition. The white trousers are constructed nearly identically, with the exception that all the buttons are brass, there are straps to pass under the shoe/boot buttoned at the bottom of the trouser leg, and the bullion stripe is only 1 5/8" wide. A few minor soiled areas and just a trace of moth tracks, else also perfect.
