    Description

Lot of Two Republic of Texas $50.00 Texas Navy Certificates 1841. Texas Navy (1836-1843). During the Texas Revolution, government officials in Washington on the Brazos decided to establish an official navy. In January 1836, agents purchased four schooners, Invincible, Brutus, Independence, and Liberty. Under the command of Commodore Charles E. Hawkins they helped win independence by preventing a Mexican blockade of the Texas coast, seizing Mexican ships carrying reinforcements and supplies to its army, and sending their cargoes on to Texas volunteer army. The independence was captured and two other ships were wrecked shortly after the revolution. A threat to blockade Texas by Mexico's navy after the founding of the Texas Republic caused the Republic to buy six vessels from the United States to harass the Mexican coast and prey on its commerce. The navy operated until 1843 when it returned to Galveston.

These two pre-printed Texas Navy receipts 9" x 4" are from the "City of Austin, Treasury Department", (Both dated) "April 23, 1841" (Certificate No. 220 & 545) The last Naval appropriation being inadequate to satisfy the claims of the officers, sailors and marines of the Texian navy, the holder of this certificate, or his assignee, will be entitled to Fifty Dollars upon its presentation at the Treasury, out of the first appropriation by congress to meet claims.

    Condition:

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
