Late 18th Early 19th Century Hand Crafted American Military Drum Major's Baton. Fabricated entirely of wood, 58" overall with heavy brass tip. the 4" diameter 'ball' at the top with turned decoration and retaining most of the original gilt paint, which extends 3" down onto the octagonal shaft. The ball is separately affixed to the shaft. The shaft is octagonal for the upper 14" and then becomes round to the tip. The remainder of the shaft exhibits the period red paint, with the exception of the lower 7 1/2" which is silver. The baton also retains 70% of the original cord wrapping which is composed of red wool with intertwined bullion threads. Overall the piece retains 90% of the original paint and is completely untouched/uncleaned with very nice patina overall and dark smooth patina on the brass tip.
In reality a very rare piece of early American military band equipment and the first example constructed entirely of wood we've ever seen.
