Large Sheffield Bowie Knife C. 1850. Although unmarked this is a known Sheffield pattern produced prior to the Civil War. 15" overall with 10½" blade with 5½" unsharpened clipped point. 1¾" at its widest point. Blade generally smooth and dark, totally untouched with some scattered old surface rust and salt and peppering with a wonderful "look." Heavy brass guard affixed in halves, tang and blade of the knife all forged as one piece. Wooden plaque grips appear to be ebony with six round head iron tacks applied as decoration on both sides. Brass bird head pommel affixed in the same manner as the guard. Hilt about perfect with very nice untouched patina overall. There is no scabbard. A most impressive pre-Civil War knife in desirable untouched condition.
