Identified American Staff Officer's Chapeau, Dated 1838. Rises to 9" in the front and 9 3/4" in the back. Very fine condition, just some minor wear along the bottom edge from honest use. Heavy gold bullion tassels at each side with six 3/8" gold bullion loops and an early staff button on the front. The button is attached too tightly to discern the backmark. Also 2 1/2" wide black silk diagonal band at each side. 2 1/4" thin brown leather sweat band, which is neatly inscribed in ink script "B. Wright 1838". Lining of patterned white silk and delicate netting, embossed in blue in the crown "W. H. Horseman & Co./No. 8 Maiden Lane/New York". Lining/sweat band show some honest wear but intact and very good/excellent. Exceptionally nice example of this scarce piece of American military headgear and especially desirable ID'd and dated.
