Full Stock Percussion Rifle by Daniel Young Centre County Pennsylvania C. 1840. Young worked initially in Aaronburg, Pennsylvania., subsequently locating to Boalsburg, Pennsylvania. While examples of his later Boalsburg work are often encountered, examples of his early Aaronsburg work, such as this rifle, are rarely seen. 42", deeply rifled, .50 caliber octagonal barrel, 15/16" across the flats. All metal generally smooth and dark with just some pitting at the breech. Engraved decoration around the front and rear sights, and signed in block letters "D. Young", between the rear sight and the breech. Engraved silver eight pointed star inlaid on the shallow cheekpiece, with plain oval silver wrist escutcheon. Two semi circular inlays just forward of the lock, one with engraved edge decoration, the other clearly a very old, and reasonably well done, replacement. Very narrow brass trigger guard with double set triggers. Mechanically fine, excellent bore, Jos. Golcher lock. 10½" spacing between each of the ramrod pipes and the gun clearly never shortened. Wonderful patchbox with three piercings in the finial, and of a form we've not encountered before. Engraved highlights throughout, including delicate engraved floral/ vine motif on the lid. 3½" engraved brass toeplate which incorporates the patchbox release button. Wood overall excellent with nice patina and retaining much of the artificial stripe. Just one minor hairline at the toe of the butt and one small replaced sliver along the top edge of the right side of the forestock 12" from the muzzle. Incised line along the ramrod channel. Retains the original ramrod. Fine example of a central Pennsylvania rifle by an obviously highly skilled maker.
