    Description

Fine Quality American Percussion Half Stock Target Rifle, Circa 1850. Unsigned but most likely New York state. Rather diminutive size and possibly designed for use by a youth. 23¼", .45 caliber rifled octagonal barrel, 1" across the flats, the muzzle turned with a circular face. Bore perfect. Patent breech with clean out screw, back action lock. Adjustable, hooded, front sight with post and beautifully made tang peep sight. All metal with smooth dark patina, absolutely no rust or pitting, very nice. 1¼" pewter forend tip, German silver wedge escutcheons and lock bolt plate. Elaborate brass trigger guard with signs that a longer trigger guard was once mounted on the gun with expertly inlaid wood hiding the earlier inlet. Obviously done during the period of use, and difficult to detect. Brass butt plate and 4½" brass toe plate with fancy finial. Walnut stock about perfect with nice smooth patina, just four tiny tack holes on the cheek side where a circular brass plate was apparently mounted, really negligible. Mechanically perfect with two click tumbler and single trigger. A very crisp and pretty little American rifle that would doubtless be as accurate today as it was 160 years ago.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
