    Description

Exceptional American Artillery Officer's Sword C. 1835. 30¼" straight blade with fuller extending from the ricasso to the tip. Undecorated portion of the blade retains most of the original mint luster, just some very minor scattered light surface rust, easily cleaned. The lower 2/3 of the blade retains 95% of the original fire blue, along with all of the original gilt on the engraved scroll and arms panoply decorations, including American shield and liberty cap. There are also two 1¼" white etched panels on each side of the blade incorporating floral motifs. As with the upper portion of the blade some very light scattered surface rust that would clean nicely leaving little if any residue. Hilt retains 95% of the original gold wash. Quillons of heavy finely detailed oak leaves, with langets also incorporating deep relief oak leaves. Ferrule at the base of the grip with line decoration, extensively carved ivory grip about perfect with rich mellow patina with one tiny hairline at the base, not affecting soundness, and a couple of tiny chips at the top. Eaglehead and backstrap cast as one piece. Head with prominent crown and superb engraved delineation of feathers. Missing only the brass chain guard although suspension rings are present, easily replaced. The face of the scabbard profusely and deeply engraved with leaf motifs at the ring mounts and drag. Retains 98% of the original gilt, just one negligible dent near the tip. Also retains both original brass sword hangers. Snap swivels with floral decoration, 3/8" wide intricately woven brass hangers with brass hook for attaching to the sword belt. Also all retaining 95% of the original gilt. A really exceptional American eaglehead for both quality and condition.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
