    Description

Col. Francis S. Belton Archive of Letters, 1847-1854. Francis Bolton was an American soldier who distinguished himself in the War of 1812 in the defense of Fort Erie. Precipitated by the 1845 U.S. annexation of Texas, Belton also distinguished himself in the Mexican American War by commanding a regiment that helped capture Mexico City.

Collection of six two-page, octavo letters (three on cream writing paper, three on pale blue paper) written by Belton variously to his father, wife, and son dated May 29, 1847, August 26, 1847, Sept. 26, 1847, Sept. 21, 1852, Oct. 28, 1854, and November 21, 1854. Belton offers fascinating first-hand accounts of his experiences in Mexico, and provides details of some of the important battles in which he served. An excerpt discussing the Battle of Churubusco follows:

August 26, 1847, written as Lieutenant-Colonel of the 3rd US Artillery: "The great battle of Mexico was fought on the 20th I have reason to think I have received a brevet. I led the storming party which attacked the works at Churubusco and thank my God I am unhurt... My battalion suffered severely - 137 rank & file & 9 officers went into battle... and 9 were killed and 37 wounded, 46 out of 137... You will see full accounts. All praise the little 3rd & my officers think I have led them well." Letters range in condition from very good to fine. Prospective buyers are advised to review the lot carefully prior to bidding.
