C.1850 Militia Staff Officer's Sword by W. H. Horstmann. Identical to FIG 114 in Peterson. 29 1/2" straight blade elliptical in cross section. Decorated with etching for one half its length. Scroll work, arms/flag panoplies and American eagle with shield and motto on obverse, with similar motifs but including the Horstmann Philadelphia logo on reverse. Etching shows some wear but all visible, the blade generally smooth and light gray with no rust, pitting or nicks, just a few very small areas of salt and peppering. All brass hilt with heavy cross guard decorated with cast scroll motifs. Chain guard which attaches to a 'pistol grip' pommel with similar cast decoration. One piece fluted bone grip with deep dark patina, just one minor age hairline on obverse but very sound. All brass scabbard decorated with deeply engraved floral/scroll motifs along with arms panoply including American flag and shield. Fitted with two ring mounts and frog stud. The lower mount is separately affixed, exhibiting deep relief cast scroll work. A few minor dents and a 1" split on the seam, on the reverse, just above the lower mount, easily repaired. Marked with the number 424B at the throat on the reverse, along with Horstmann cartouche. Nice marked example of this unusual form.
