    C. 1855 Bedford County Percussion Pennsylvania 'Short Rifle' by John Border. The gun is now 41" overall with 26", full octagon, .44 caliber rifled barrel. Metal generally smooth and dark with some very light pitting at the breech and salt and peppering on the rear sight extension. Classic slender handmade Bedford County lock signed in script JB, with unique Bedford hammer. All brass furniture, with slender side plate and trigger guard and 6" toe plate. We are of the opinion the patchbox, while period, along with the pin escutcheons, were added when the gun was shortened. The patchbox lid is friction fitted with the aperture rather crudely carved. The nose cap is also probably a period replacement although the ramrod ferrules are original. The alterations were clearly executed during the period and the gun was possibly altered for use by a youth, or as a so called 'buggy rifle'. The hand forged 6 1/2" long rear sight extension is dovetailed in place behind the original rear sight. The front sight is also clearly period in terms of manufacture and fitting. The maple stock is exceptional. Finely figured curly maple, as characteristic of many of these Bedford makers, which is further enhanced by skillfully applied artificial striping. Wood excellent with smooth even wear and nice patina. Interesting little gun and desirable as a product of the iconic Border family of gunsmiths.
