    Description

    C. 1840 Heavy, Unsigned Full Stock American Percussion Rifle. Although unsigned a number of anomalous characteristics indicate the gun is likely of southern origin. 42 3/4" octagonal .54 caliber deeply rifled barrel, 1 1/8" across the flats, with smooth dark patina and just some light pitting at the breech, with excellent bore. Single screw lock marked T. Golcher, adjustable double set triggers. The triggers work fine but the gun will not stay at full cock. All brass furniture with the exception of the slender decorative trigger guard, which is iron, and appears to be original to the gun. The brass patch box is friction fitted with a spring and a small overlapped projection to facilitate opening. The 3" toe plate, which was originally 3 3/4" " is a replacement. The patchbox, with worn engraving, is typical of those from southeastern Pennsylvania and is likely recycled from an earlier rifle but has clearly been on this gun since the day it was made. Maple stock with artificial graining and an old coat of varnish. Saddle like cheek piece that ends in a curl at the top, which is decorated with a small circular silver inlay. There is also a silver heart inlaid at the wrist. Stock with heavy artificial striping and there is an old filled area at the toe of the butt, as well as on the right side of the forestock at the middle ramrod pipe. Original brass nose cap, ramrod ferrules and side plate which is pointed on both ends and held in place with two small screws. Interesting and impressive rifle.
