American Percussion Double Rifle Signed H. Gross C. 1845. Signed "H. Gross" in block letters on the barrel rib. This is apparently Henry G. Gross of Union County, Pennsylvania and subsequently Tiffin, Ohio. Heavy 34½" deeply rifled round barrels, the right side .44 caliber and the left side .50 caliber. Each barrel with a separate front sight and separate notch in the rear sight. All metal smooth and dark with just some minor pitting at the breech. Mechanically fine, bores excellent, back action locks marked "C. L. Barnes & Co.", double set triggers. All brass furniture including wrist escutcheon with is engraved with script initials. The curly maple stock was apparently lightly cleaned at some point and now has a very light and expertly applied coat of varnish. There was on old line crack beneath the locks that was repaired but needs to be redone and could be made imperceptible. Two iron ramrod ferrules and the ramrod appears to be original. Interesting American rifle and a scarce form.
