    Description

American Militia Infantry Officer's Sword C. 1840. 31 1/4" double edge blade with single narrow center fuller. Blade near mint, etched for 2/3 its length with floral/scroll motifs, along with liberty cap and American eagle with stars and motto on obverse. Guard with acorn shaped finials decorated with acanthus leaves. Cross guard with deep relief, berry, leaf and scroll motif surrounded by four stars. Carved/checkered ivory grip with hairline on both sides but intact and sound. The unique 'pistol' pommel with deep relief scroll motifs terminating in a heavily embellished six pointed star. Double chain guard. Hilt overall excellent retaining traces of the original silver finish. The profusely engraved brass scabbard, interestingly with several areas retaining all of the original silver, while other areas retain just traces, heavily engraved with leaf and geometric motifs, and a spread wing eagle with shield between the ring mounts. Similar decoration, with further embellishment on the lower 8" of the scabbard. Three suspension rings and a frog stud which is decorated in deep relief. Scabbard excellent with just a few minor shallow dents, negligible. A very pretty American sword and a very rare form.
