American F/L Half Stock Rifle C. 1830. Likely New York or New England. Very heavy 34" .41 caliber octagonal rifled barrel 1 1/16" across the flats. Original F/L configuration with what appears to be a handmade lock with roller frizzen, that is elaborately engraved. All metal generally smooth and dark. Barrel held in place with two wedges with brass escutcheons. All other mountings also of brass. Four piece patchbox with charming detail of a pea fowl with scrollwork on the lid. The lid opens with a friction fitted spring. The lock was originally made to accommodate two bolts but only one bolt is utilized. The maple stock is generally excellent with some old damage, and equally old repair work, just forward of the lock, else fine. Molded cheekpiece, the barrel tang extends 5" to the wrist. Mechanically fine, very good bore. The ramrod is a modern replacement. Nice example of a very scarce form..
