American Eaglehead Artillery Officer's Saber Likely The Work Of F. W. Widmann 32 1/2' curved blade decorated with gilt highlighted engraved floral and military motif decorations. Retains most of the original gilt highlighting with the balance of the blade a smooth gray / dark patina with absolutely no rust, or pitting. Hilt with shield shaped langets with drapery at the top, beadwork edge and tucked wing eagle with shield in the center. Very large decorated clamshell quillon. The wide and heavy reverse P knucklebow is composed of intricately intertwined scrolls and beadwork, slightly bent and now loose at the pommel. The very large eaglehead incorporates a full backstrap with a 3/4" sheet brass ferrule at the base decorated with Widmann's typical grapevine motif. The carved ivory grip with a few tight cracks and a few chips at the top. The rather heavy all brass scabbard near perfect with just one minor shallow dent near center mount. Two wide ring mounts decorated with vine and grape motifs engraved above the top ring mount with flag panoply and between the ring mounts with striking, large spread wing eagle and shield on clouds and surmounted by stars and rays. The entire lower section of the scabbard is engraved with vines and leaves along with a shield.Auction Info
