    Description

Possibly the Single Most Iconic Image of American Involvement in World War I - The Uncle Sam Recruiting Poster by James Montgomery Flagg. Circa 1917, 30" X 40", printed for the United States Army. The poster is simple in its message and imagery. Flagg drew his inspiration from several sources; the 1916 Lord Kichener poster published by David Allen & Sons, London, which depicts Lord Kichener pointing his finger in the same forceful way and calling on Britons to enlist. Secondly, Uncle Sam, who became a national symbol for patriotic participation, was modeled on a self-portrait of Flagg himself. This image originally appeared on the cover of Leslie's magazine, for which Flagg worked as an illustrator. It appeared on the July 6, 1916, cover with the caption "What are you doing for preparedness ?" It did not appear with the "I Want You" text until February 15, 1917. Unmounted, near perfect condition with just a few minor wrinkles at the lower left corner. The centerpiece of any American World War I collection.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
