    Description

Philippine War Good Luck Poster Showing Future President Taft. A superb and quite large, 19" x 25", example of American lithography, circa 1900., as produced in an overseas war zone. The design of this colorful and lively poster is credited in the lower margin to Corporal Herbert E. Ellsworth, Co. "F", 30th Infantry, U.S. Volunteers. It was printed by William Partier in Manila. "Good Luck to the American Soldiers in the Philippines" is the theme of this production. A blank partially printed service form, similar to those on post-Civil War service escutcheons, is included. The dominant graphic element consists of a massive celestial horseshoe studded with stars and twenty portraits honoring the American leadership in the Philippines. Among the 19 military luminaries recognized here are Generals Otis, Lawton and McArthur (father of Douglas). The civilian administration is represented by none other than future president William Howard Taft. Several scenes of American soldiers in combat and one of a Philippine village form the poster's background imagery. This item is mounted in a gilt wooden frame to an overall size of 25" x 31". A very few marginal water stains, else very fine condition and especially attractive.
