Washington is appointed "General and Commander in Chief of the army of the United colonies"

Period Fair Copy of George Washington's Military Commission. One page on vellum, 16" x 12.5", Philadelphia; June 19, 1775. The commission, appoints Washington "...General and Commander in Chief of the army of the United Colonies and of all the forces raised or to be raised by them and of all others who shall voluntarily offer their service and join the said army for the defence [sic] of American Liberty and for repelling every hostile invasion thereof..."

When war with Britain broke out after the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Washington was serving as a Virginia delegate at the Second Continental Congress. On June 14, 1775, Congress created the Continental Army and were in search of a candidate who could command the army. Washington had not sought the role but was nominated by John Adams who saw him as a worthy candidate; he had military experience, the bearing of a leader, was a strong patriot and came from a respected lineage, and most importantly, his ties to Virginia would help draw the support of the southern colonies. Washington eventually accepted the commission and was promoted to a Full General and Commander in Chief on June 19. Washington would go on to assume command of the troop at Boston on July 3, coincidentally making his first full day as Commander in Chief on July 4.

Condition: Vertical and horizontal folds, some small amounts of paper loss where paper was weakened, affects very little of the text. Minor toning at edges and spotting. Overall very fine.
