Stewart rose to board chairman of Standard Oil of Indiana but was ousted after the Tea Pot Dome scandal. During the Spanish-American War, Stewart served as a Major in the 3rd U.S. Vol. Cavalry known as Grigsby's Rough Riders being promoted to Colonel of the 1st Regt South Dakota National Guard in 1899 . Interestingly it was Grigsby's "Cowboys" or "Rough Riders" who provided the inspiration to Theodore Roosevelt for the sobriquet eventually attached to the 1st U. S.
