    Description

P1853 Enfield .577 Caliber Percussion Rifled Musket, Barnett / London, Bearing the Very Rare Inspector's Mark of Confederate Arms Agent Caleb Huse, and a History of Capture by a Member of the 71st New York Inf. The gun is overall in superb untouched condition. All metal smooth with patina ranging from dark brown to gray. Mechanically perfect, very good bore, excellent markings including correct British proofs at breech. Wood also completely untouched in really excellent condition with deep, dark, untouched smooth patina, and sharp edges. The letters "R. T. P." neatly die stamped in the wood opposite the lock, with a mark in the wood behind the trigger guard, now illegible. Most importantly, however, in a 5/16" cartouche in the wood, 1" forward of the butt plate tang, on the stock comb, is CH over 1. Absolutely authentic and showing patina and wear consistent with the rest of the wood. The gun also carries a verbal history of having been captured by a member of the 71st New York Inf. and LXXI (71) is neatly carved on the wrist of the gun just behind the tang, again, unquestionably period. Missing the rear sling swivel, else complete and original in every respect. An exceptional Enfield for both rarity and condition with a superb history.
