DescriptionCivil War: Carte-de-Visite [CDV] Album with Eighty Images and More.
The value in this lot consists exclusively, or nearly so, in an 8.5" x 6" photo album that houses eighty cartes and tintypes. The vast majority show Union soldiers. Some of them are signed. All images will be posted on our web site. The front cover of the album is detached. The title page shows the maker, McKnight & Rutter of Philadelphia, and is inscribed in ink: "To my Sister Mary E. Smith From her Brother A. J. Smith Nov 5th 62". We see forty-nine from-life images of soldiers, along with various copy images. The images are held firmly in place. We were able to remove two examples, both signed on the verso. One reads "Yours truly H. S. Benner Capt. Co. 'K' 101 Pa. V. V. Gettysburg Pa." while the other reads: "Yours truly Lt. Geo. H. Bowers 16th Conn. Vols. Hartford". It is quite possible that a closer examination will uncover more soldiers who served at famous engagements of the war. Sold with a large sheaf of 1875-1876 National Guard State of New York muster rolls, forty-one copy images of generals and politicians, a clipped signature of General Schenck, forty-five CDVs and tintypes of assorted subjects and forty-two small format silver print snapshots of a circa 1900 trip around the world.
