Outstanding, Rare, Three Pound Ketcham Hand Grenade. This original, three pound, cast iron projectile is a specimen of the hand thrown grenade patented by Mr. William F. Ketcham of Buffalo, N. Y. in August 1861. The projectile exhibits an egg shaped form with a round opening at each end. The plunger, which is a soft metal tube, consists of a stem of iron with a round iron concave disc at one end, the stem having a spring attached, which secures it in the soft metal tube and prevents it from dropping out, is intact. The powder charge was placed in the shell and, when ready a wooden shaft fitted with four pasteboard fins was inserted into the opposite end of the grenade. The finned 'stick' serving as a rudimentary guidance system. Nicely stamped with black ink on one of the fins, "Patented Aug 20 1861". The grenade exhibits a smooth dark olive patina with both casting seams visible. Fins and wood shaft are perfect and retains the remnants of an old museum tag. Choice example of this novel and rare Civil War weapon.
