Outstanding and Rare Civil War Officer's "Plug Hat" One of the most difficult items of Civil War headgear to obtain is the so-called "plug hat" with its distinctive low, rounded crown and wide brim. This very popular form of slouch hat is seen extensively in period photography yet only a handful of original specimens survive today. This is one of the finest known examples. The 3" wide brim has a 1/8" wide ribbed silk binding and, like the entire hat, remains soft and supple. Around the base is a twisted gilt and black silk hat cord as per regulations, which retains one of the two "acorn" tips at the end. The rounded body rises just over 4" and on the top a brass grommet "ventilation" device has been installed by the original owner. On the front is mounted a large embroidered infantry officer's bugle having a silver metallic regimental number "5" in the bend. It is sewn to a 3 1/2 " wide, tin-backed velvet oval. Inside is a 2" wide, thin leather sweatband with an attractive scalloped edging. About half of the now-faded purple lining remains but is fragile, with only a portion of the gold maker's impression still visible in the crown. While showing period use, the overall condition of this rarity is superb. An eye-catching and most important addition to any Civil War collection
