Ornate Imperial Era German Professional Association Banner. 22" x 22". A stunning example of late 19th century German hand-work likely created for one of the many professional guilds or outdoor enthusiast groups in Köln (Cologne). The front of the two-sided banner has a background of burgundy velvet with 2½" gold fringe running along two edges. There are small wire hanging loops at the top and brocade hanging straps along one edge. The Reichsadler in the center of the banner is composed on a silver wire background with gold wire and cotton thread accents. Above and below the eagle are captions in German gothic script applied in heavy gold wire. Ornate floral designs are executed in cotton thread with gold wire borders. The banner is dated 1898. The reverse of the banner has a white satin background and features a backpack, walking sticks, canteen and hat as the central design with a motton in gothic script above and below. Most of the design on the reverse is executed in cotton thread with gold wire borders and small accents. The banner is in remarkable condition with some loss to the satin and small stains on the reverse side, otherwise it is in fine condition.
