    Description

Only Example Noted, Civil War Hat Insignia and Shoulder Straps, with Period ID to Capt. George S. Tuckerman, Commanding Company D, 1st USSS The pieces are accompanied by a period ink script note, "Worn by G. S. Tuckerman in the war of the Rebellion as Captain in the U. S. Sharpshooters." Tuckerman enlisted as a Captain, commanding Company D, 1st USSS, from Cherry Valley, N. Y. on 9/27/61. He subsequently resigned his commission on 10/2/62. The group includes Tuckerman's shoulder straps, 1 1/2" X 4" with single gold bullion border and gold bullion captain's bars with all bullion edged with coiled brass wire. Green wool background with some minor fading but excellent. One strap retains the original brown shoestring ties, while they are missing on the other strap. Straps overall very good, sound condition with absolutely no mothing on either the green velvet backgrounds or black silk undersides. The hat badge is probably the rarest piece of Civil War insignia we've ever catalogued. Generally a 2 5/8" X 3 1/2" oval, but flat across the top, with green wool background and polished cotton backing. Remains of stitches clearly evident where it was attached to Tuckerman's hat. Gold bullion wreath enclosing old English US surmounting crossed percussion rifles with slings, with old English SS underneath. Difficult to tell because of age tarnish but the USSS may, in fact, be in silver bullion. Overall near perfect condition, just showing its age and evidence of minor wear commensurate with Tuckerman's relatively short term of service.

During Tuckerman's term of service the regiment was engaged in the Seven Day's before Richmond, and numerous other actions including Mechanicsville, Gaine's Mill, 2d Bull Run and Antietam. Interestingly his resignation occurs just two weeks subsequent to the horrific bloodletting at Antietam.

Only example of this most rare piece of insignia we have ever encountered, and possibly the only example extant. Especially desirable with this excellent period ID.
