One of the Most Remarkable Civil War Hand Carved Pipes We've Ever Seen with Superb History. Absolutely exquisite quality. The front with a full spread wing eagle above a shield with crossed American flags with rays above and cannon barrel and drum below. All carved in very deep relief with superb detail. The pipe is inscribed in a riband below "By R. S. Ewing to S. B. Eaton". Beneath that are geometric designs surrounding another riband "St. John's College Hospital / Annapolis, Md. / 1863. There is a silver rim around the top edge of the pipe with a slightly convex 1/4" high silver top, hinged at the back, which is inscribed "By C. P. Couch / TO / S. B. Eaton".

The back portion of the pipe, where the stem attaches is a bulldog with teeth bared wearing a collar with small diamond shaped mother of pearl inlays. The eagle's wings are extended around the back of the pipe with a carved belt and buckle. The small pin on the lid hinge is missing and has been replaced by a bent straight pin, else overall perfect condition with wonderful patina. The pipe is accompanied by a tree branch like stem with bark and what appears to be a gutta percha mouth piece, although the stem fits perfectly it is certainly possible this is an old replacement. The pipe shows no signs of having been smoked.

In 1863 the Union Army commandeered St. John's College for use as a hospital. Couch was a member of the 3rd Va. Cavalry. R. S. Ewing served in an Ohio regiment. Sherburne Blake Eaton had an illustrious career both during and after the Civil War. He enlisted in the 124th Ohio on 10/1/62 and was promoted to Captain on 5/23/63. He subsequently served on the staff of Gen. Hazen and was severely wounded at Atlanta necessitating his subsequent retirement. Eaton went on to a very successful legal career after the war and in 1881 became the General Counsel for the Edison Electric Light Company. A really magnificent pipe with great history.
