    Description

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) - General Alfred Maximilian Gruenther, Supreme Allied Commander Europe. The flag of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) consists of a dark blue field charged with a white compass rose emblem and white lines radiating from the four cardinal directions. Adopted three years after the creation of the organization, it has been the flag of NATO since October 14, 1953. The dark blue symbolizes the Atlantic Ocean, while the circle stands for the unity of the member states.

The NATO flag is an approximately 36" X 62", wool, double applique, bunting flag finished with a ropes header with a wooden toggle affixed to the upper hoist. The flag is marked on the lower obverse hoist, "NATO - GRUENTHER." This refers to NATO's second Supreme Allied Commander, General Alfred Gruenther, 1953-1956.

NATO was formed in 1950. Its predecessor was the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) which was responsible for the planning and execution of combined joint operations in order to meet Allied political objectives. NATO is an intergovernmental, defensive, military alliance between members but with a civilian administrative component so that all roles and functions support the security role of the alliance as a whole.

General Gruenther, a West Pointer, was the direct successor to General Matthew Ridgeway. At age 53, he was the youngest four-star general in the U.S. Army. He was an atypical general in that it was the largest formation he ever commanded as an artillery brigade.

His skills lay elsewhere, he was a consummate staff officer who possessed a brilliant and analytical mind honed during his years as professor at West Point and as the Deputy Commandant at the War College. During the war he was the chief strategist and principal planner for the allied invasions of North Africa in 1942 and Italy in 1943. His colleagues nicknamed him, "The Brain." He later served on Eisenhower's staff.

He brought those same skills to NATO at a crucial time. Under his watch NATO successfully dealt with the admission of West Germany and the rise of the Warsaw Pact.

Condition: The flag is in good condition. It is used, and worn an otherwise complete with the exception that the bottom hoist portion of the header rope has been removed.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
