Norman Price, Illustration from "Whistling Cat", Liberty Magazine, pen, ink and gouache on board, 28" x 14" (sight size), matted and framed to an overall size of 34.75" x 22.25", signed lower right "Norman Price". The illustration appeared in the January 2nd, 1932 issue of Liberty Magazine on pages 30 and 31. The illustration depicts a night conference by a group of officers meeting with General Hancock under the lighted boughs of blooming cherry trees as a lone picket stands guard in the shadows.

Norman Mills Price (1877-1951) was an American illustrator whose work reflected his deep interest in historical subjects. By 1912 Price was working as an illustrator in New York City, where his art was characterized by detailed documentary research that served the dramatic qualities of his subjects. Price worked in color and black-and-white, and was perhaps most notable for his richly textured use of pen and ink. Among the literary works he illustrated were the novels of Robert W. Chambers and Rebecca West, and the stories of William Shakespeare; his art also adorned the pages of American Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Liberty, St. Nicholas, and Woman's Home Companion. This illustration, as well as others by Price offered in this auction, were from a Liberty Magazine serialization of the 1932 book Whistling Cat by Robert W. Chambers.
