NOMINATION PAPER FOR ROBERT E. LEE AS GENERAL IN CHIEF OF THE CONFEDERACY - INITIALED BY PRESIDENT JEFFERSON DAVIS. This 8" x 11.5" letter documents the promotion of Robert E. Lee to General-in-Chief of the Confederate armies. Dated January 31, 1865 it is part of the group of official Confederate papers that were salvaged from Richmond as the Confederate capital fell to Union forces in 1865. Kept by Davis' secretary Burton J. Harrison, they were separated from official Confederate hands as the Confederates fled, first to the 'new capital' of Danville, Virginia and through the Carolinas to Georgia. The letter reads as follows:Transcript/ January 31, 1865
The Senate proceeded to consider the nomination of Robt E. Lee to General in Chief of the Armies of the Confederate States of America; and, it was Resolved, That the Senate do advise and consent to his appointment agreeable to the nomination of the President.
Office Secretary Senate C.S.A.
Richmond, January 31, 1865
I do hereby certify that the foregoing is a correct transcript from the Executive Journal of the Senate of this day.
James H. Nash
Secretary
The transcript is docketed by Burton J. Harrison on the reverse and is initialed "J. D." by Jefferson Davis at the top. This historical document is the only one known to exist, the transcript of the hero of the Confederacy's appointment as General-in-Chief, initialed by the Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
Condition: The document is on lined paper and is in excellent condition with no fold marks or foxing.
