Body near perfect with just a few tiny, really negligible moth holes. There is a 5/16" circular black wire screen vent in the center of the crown. 1/16" gold bullion tape piping around crown and base, as well as vertically on sides and back. 1/2" patent leather chinstrap with gilt brass adjusting buckle and leather loop, perfect. Original gilt bullion embroidered officer's insignia on front, with smaller Hardee hat style eagle above, and crossed rifles with numeral 4 above, dating the hat to C. 1875 - 1878. Insignia on blue wool background, the same color as the body of the hat and about perfect. Interior with 1 1/2" black Moroccan leather sweat band with waffle like finish, showing just very minor wear. about perfect. Black polished cotton lining, with star pattern stitching in the crown, also about perfect. 15/16" X 3 1/4" black silk label with green /embroidery stitched in the crown, "Stryker & Co. / 431 Broome St.". Overall, an untouched, superb quality and condition example of this very rare piece of US military headgear.
