Napoleon I Imperial Horse Breast Straps. These heavy harness leather straps are 25" long and 2" at the widest point. Each strap has a deep relief brass Napoleonic "N" surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves 6" from the top and 8" from the bottom. In the center of each strap is the Imperial Napoleonic crest with an eagle in the center surrounded by the chain of the Légion d'honneur, the crest is superimposed over the Hand of Justice and the Sceptre, and surmounted with the Imperial Crown made of eagles with raised wings alternating with arcs, the whole topped with a globe bearing a cross. Very fine condition. These straps are believed to have been removed from the carriage of Emperor Napoleon I captured at Genappe on June 18, 1815 following the Battle of Waterloo.

The carriage, built by Goeting, was taken as a prize of war and presented to George, the Prince Regent of Great Britain who sold it to William Bullock for 2,500 guineas. Bullock put it on display in London at the Egyptian Hall in 1816 and took it on tour to Bristol, Dublin and Edinburgh, earning him £35,000. The carriage changed hands twice again before it was purchased by Madame Tussaud and displayed in her Napoleon Gallery. The vehicle had fixtures for maps, telescope, soap, surgical supplies, wines, spirits, swords, pistols, a folding steel camp bed, mattresses, and was fitted with three small folding steps to assist the Emperor. The carriage was destroyed by fire in 1925.
